Horizontal cracks in rendered or brick walls

Horizontal cracks running across a wall at mid-height or near the base are less common but more serious. They can indicate soil pressure pushing laterally against a subfloor wall or retaining element, or they can signal that a wall has begun to bow outward as the footing beneath it shifts. Any horizontal crack wider than 2 mm should be assessed by a professional.

Cracks at wall-ceiling junctions

Hairline cracks where internal walls meet the ceiling are normal and nearly universal in older Wagga homes. They result from the different rates at which timber and plaster expand and contract. Measure width. Use a credit card (about 0.8 mm thick) or a simple feeler gauge. Record the width at the widest point.
