Tree Roots and Foundation Damage in Wagga Wagga: Which Species Are the Highest Risk?

Why tree roots damage foundations on reactive clay

Remove any large established shrubs within 2 m of a foundation.

Lower-risk species for Wagga gardens

  • Crepe myrtle (Lagerstroemia), Small to medium, moderate root system. Keep 3-5 m from foundations.

What to do if you have a high-risk tree near your home

If you have an established high-risk tree within the concern distances from your foundation:

  1. Do not simply remove it immediately. Rapid removal of a large tree that has been drawing moisture for years can cause the reverse problem, the soil rehydrates and heaves. Staged removal over two to three years is generally recommended.
  2. Commission a foundation inspection before and after any significant tree removal to document the baseline condition.
  3. Consider root barriers. Physical root barriers (high-density polyethylene sheets installed vertically in a trench) can redirect roots away from foundations. They work best as prevention before roots have penetrated the critical zone.
  4. Monitor cracks and floor level. Mark existing cracks and check for changes seasonally.
